About Supporting PI
07/12/2009

Privacy International is the world's oldest international privacy group. For nearly 20 years we have been at the cutting edge of privacy issues, and have led campaigns and advocacy in more than fifty countries to protect people against intrusion by governments and corporations that seek to erode this fragile right. We believe that privacy forms part of the bedrock of freedoms, and our goal has always been to use every means to preserve it. Our campaigns are often controversial, but they always respect the primacy of truth and principle.
We need your support. We are constantly fighting countless battles in countries around the world trying to generate, inform, and shape policy debates to ensure that our privacy remains protected.
How do I support PI?
We welcome private donations by post to our office. Checks should be made payable to "Privacy International" and delivered to us at
Privacy International 265 Strand London, WC2R 1BH GB
We have created a PayPal account to administer on-line donations. We have discussed our account with PayPal officials and in our deliberations we came to the conclusion that PayPal offers a safer and more secure way to make online payments. PayPal does not share your credit card or bank account number with Privacy International. Please refer to our privacy policy and Paypal's privacy policy (on Paypal's site).

PI is a non-profit organization, but because of UK Charities law, as long as we conduct political campaigns and advocacy we may not apply for charity status. Our financial reports and Articles of Incorporation are available through Companies House UK, under our registration as a non-profit private limited company is under no. 4354366.
Why Support PI?
Privacy International leads campaigns to protect privacy, freedom of expression, and to uphold other civil liberties.
Our focus is broad. Across the world we campaign against unjust and intrusive laws. We monitor the activities of inter-governmental organisations, and ensure that policies and technologies emerging from the private sector respect fundamental human rights.
Our staff members include world-leading experts on consumer rights, data protection, identity, internet privacy, and freedom of information.
Our campaigns and research influence policy-makers around the world. We have advised ministers, parliamentarians, regulators, industry leaders, law societies, leading members of civil society, international treaty bodies, amongst others on how to best protect privacy.
Our outreach to other organisations is extensive, with partners in 40 countries.
We have the world's most extensive online privacy archive, used widely by officials, companies, researchers, journalists, students, and non-governmental organizations. With one million user sessions per year on our website, we have an extensive database of information on a variety of countries, international organisations, and issues.
Our reports are widely read and cited by the media in leading publications on a regular basis.
Our campaigns include partner organisations from around the world. The Big Brother Awards, for example, are now being run by local groups in seventeen countries.
Will you disclose my name and address to others?
Absolutely not. We do not rent, loan, trade, release, or otherwise make available the names of individual contributors, unless forced to do so by law. Paypal will process your personal data in accordance with their privacy policy (on Paypal's site) (which is also available as a PDF).
What will you do with the money I give?
We will use this money to fund our current projects, and to develop future programmes. We will use it to develop further educational material, more reports, and to conduct campaigns on pressing policy issues.
What are your current and upcoming projects?
Our current work is outlined on our website. We have active programmes on Freedom of Information laws around the world, Terrorism Policies and the Open Society, Policy Laundering, Identity Cards, Border Security Policies, and Freedom of Expression; as well as thematic work on privacy in developing countries, privacy and the protection of refugees, and communications surveillance.
We would like to develop an internship programme to bring in interested students and young professionals, increase the performance of our already extensive website, and start new projects on privacy and security of medical records, the protection of children's privacy, consumer protection and financial surveillance, and engage further in policies emerging from developing countries.
Who currently funds PI?
The majority of our funding comes on a project-level basis from foundations and grant-making bodies. Our core work is currently done on an entirely voluntary basis.
Our most recent activity reports, presented to our Annual General Meetings, outline our projects and sources of funding:
We thank you for your support!
