About PI

Privacy International is seeking nominations for three award categories :

  • A government department, ministry, agency or QUANGO which has unreasonably invaded privacy and established comprehensive programmes of surveillance.
  • A company or other private organisation based in the United Kingdom which has demonstrated profound disregard for the privacy of either its own personnel or the general public
  • A project or strategy -- private, government or a partnership -- that has reached an advanced stage of development or implementation, and which will achieve substantial intrusion into privacy

In addition to these awards, the judges will announce a Lifetime Achievement award to a person or organisation that has made an extraordinary contribution to the destruction of privacy. Each category also includes a "special mention" for the most popular nomination.

Privacy International will also present awards -- Winstons -- to organisations and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the protection of privacy. These will also be given to victims of privacy invasion. Nominations are also welcomed for this category.

Guidelines

Any organisation or project can be nominated for a Big Brother award, but a number of guidelines have been put in place to ensure fairness and accuracy.

  • Please ensure that the nominated organisation currently operates in Britain. UK based agents for an overseas organisation can also be nominated.
  • Projects that are nominated must either be current, or must have been operating within the past twelve months.
  • Trans-national organisations and multi-national projects can be nominated, provided a single UK agency or company can be identified as playing a key role.
  • Nominations should be as specific as possible. Nominations of mega-agencies or large multi-nationals should highlight a specific unit, section or project.
  • In the case of the Winston Awards, judges will not recognise the work of organisations which have a mandate for privacy protection (i.e. Registrars, Regulators, Ombudsmen etc). Such organisations can, however, be nominated for Big Brother awards.
  • The judges will base their decisions on sourced and referenced information before them. Nominations should, wherever possible, contain supporting data such as media reports, court cases, or references to company press releases, company information, annual reports or credible journal and trade press reports.
