Overview -- the Big Brother Awards

Each year, the national members and affiliated organizations of Privacy International present the "Big Brother" awards to the government and private sector organisations which have done the most to threaten personal privacy in their countries. Since 1998, over forty ceremonies have been held in sixteen countries and have given out hundreds of awards to some of the most powerful government agencies, individuals and corporations in those countries.

UK Big Brother Awards 2005 shortlist announced

This year’s shortlist contains a mix of some of Britain’s most greedy, incompetent, invasive and manipulative mandarins and organisations.
1984 Opera Premieres in London (external)

The Royal Opera House in London will be presenting an opera of 1984. The World premiere is May 3.
Australian Big Brother Awards 2004

The Australian Privacy Foundation announced the winners of the 2004 Australian Big Brother Awards on 25 November. The Winners were Lifetime Menace: Carl Scully, NSW Minister for Roads, People's choice: Queensland Smartcard Drivers Licence, Greatest corporate invader: Major political parties, Worst Public Agency or Official: Bob Debus, NSW Attorney-General and Most invasive technology: Biometric passports. The Best Privacy Guardian award was given to John Pane, Australia Post's Chief Privacy Officer.
50th Big Brother Award Held

CPSR-Spain held the 3rd annual Spanish Big Brother Award in Seville on 30 October 2004. The ceremony marked the 50th Big Brother Award ceremony globally. Winners were the "Government-in-the-Shadow" that led to the Indymedia servers being seized in England, Telefónica for giving out subscriber data, Zara for putting RFID chips in their products, and SGAE for their promotion of levys on blank CDs for copyright enforcement. José Manuel Gómez, creator of www.kriptopolis.com site received the positive award for his efforts promoting privacy.
Swiss Big Brother Awards

Swiss NGOs on 16 October 2004 held the 5th Swiss Big Brother Awards in Lucerne. The winners were Corps commander Hansruedi Fehrlin, Swiss Air Force(category government), santésuisse, Solothurn (cat. business), Zürich Municipal Police (cat. workspace), Josef Leu, National Councillor CVP/Lucerne (category lifetime award).

Korean Progressive Network Jimbonet and other NGOs held the 1st Big Brother Awards Korea on 22 November in Seoul. Winners were the National ID Card, the Ministry of Information and Communication, and "Phantom of Samsung SDI''. The National Intelligence Service received a special prize and the DNA Database of Convicted Criminals by Police and Prosecution was chosen the most popular by Netizens.

Big Brother Awards Switzerland 2004

The 5th annual Swiss ceremony of the Big Brother Awards will take place on 16 October in the city of Emmen. The slogan 'Nicht lamentieren, nominieren' (don't lament, nominate!) now calls on a special new category of victims of Big Brother; workers that are being controlled at the work-floor with the help of video-camera's and key-loggers. Deadline for nominations is 31 August 2004.
