Privacy International recently received a complaint from the mother
of an eleven year-old child attending a London primary school.
She had discovered that all children attending the school had
been electronically finger printed for a new library system, and
was deeply concerned by the practice. The school had not asked
the parents for their consent, not were the children given an
explanation of their legal rights.
Subsequent research by PI revealed that the finger
printing system has been sold to a thousand schools, resulting
in the mass finger printing of as many as 200,000 children. The
practice, until now, had not received any press attention. PI
has commenced a campaign to ban the use of finger printing in
schools.
