Volunteer with PI in Summer 2012

Summer volunteers in Privacy International's office are involved in all aspects of our work and help support our research, investigations and advocacy.

A summer placement could involve doing direct investigation work, conducting factual and legal research, drafting policy documents or helping us develop our website and public profile.

Summer volunteers will assist Privacy International's small team at our offices in Holborn and must be able to commit to a minimum of three days per week for two months. At the moment we only offer placements to those who can come into the office. Desirable applicants will possess:

  • a strong commitment to fighting unlawful surveillance and other intrusions into private life by governments and corporations
  • maturity and independence
  • initiative and demonstrated ability to work without supervision
  • excellent communications skills

Big Brother Inc

Privacy International is looking for volunteers to help with its Big Brother Incorporated project, an investigation into the global surveillance industry focusing on the sale of technologies to brutal and oppressive regimes intent on using them as tools of political control.

Recent tasks undertaken by volunteers have included: researching the right to privacy in constitutions around the world, investigating companies by trawling through hundreds of documents and webpages, creating content for our site, and data entry in spreadsheets on government agencies attending surveillance trade shows. We're looking for volunteers who are sufficiently interested in various aspects of the privacy field that they find some of the 'grunt work' enjoyable.

Online development

We have a hoard of research waiting for interested geeks to play with and publish online. From vizualizing our global country reports to mapping the surveillance industry, there's a lot of data we'd love to set free. If you see communicating complex ideas using data visualizations and interactive web content as an interesting challange, get in touch. Experience with Drupal is preferable, but not essential.

To apply, please send a covering letter and CV to info@privacy.org by Friday 15th June

Please see the employee information section of our privacy policy to find out how we take care of the information given to us by prospective employees and volunteers.
