New legislation gives government access to school surveillance cameras and allows the integration of facial recognition.

The new set of amendments to the Armenian Law on Police grants the Ministry of Internal Affairs access to surveillance cameras in a range of public places, along with schools, hospitals, airports, and border checkpoints. The law is a replacement for a previously abandoned attempt to create similar, though broader, powers in 2024.

Armenia does not have an existing legal framework that provides any safeguards for AI use. The law does require some safeguards, but it contains vague language, broadening the scope of the use of biometric technology. Moreover, the law leaves some details of the implementation to future regulations, leaving holes which may or may not be filled.
