Swedish school fined for facial recognition use

The Swedish Data Protection Authority (DPA) fined the Skelleftea municipality 200,000 Swedish Krona for trialling facial recognition on high-school students to track attendance.

22 students we tracked over three weeks, with the system detecting when a pupil entered a classroom.

Although the school secured parents' consent to monitor the students, this was not deemed legally reasonable because face data is sensitive personal data.

Students had a certain expectation of privacy when they entered a classroom, and there were less intrusive ways to monitor attendance, the watchdog said.
