Tajikistan pilots facial recogntion replacing access cards

Tajikistan is piloting facial recognition as a replacement for access cards and fobs at school entrances, currently running in 3 schools as part of the government's wider AI strategy. 

The stated privacy safeguard is that the ML matching runs locally within each school and data is stored on internal servers rather than sent elsewhere. 

With no dedicated AI regulator in the country, approval of AI projects run through existing sector regulators on a case-by-case basis, with no AI-specific regulation setting binding standards for privacy protection or requiring accuracy testing across different demographic groups.
