Washington State University's police department uses facial recognition technology.
Real-time or near-real-time identification, ongoing surveillance, and persistent tracking - such as keeping facial template data beyond 48 hours or cross-linking it to identify someone - are allowed if officers obtain a warrant. It is also allowed under court order to locate a missing person or identify a deceased person.
The policy document does not allow using FRT based on protected characteristics such as religion, political or social views, race, immigration status, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation.
Officers must disclose FRT use in writing to prosecutors on any case where it was applied, demographic data from surveillance warrant applications must be reported annually to the state legislature, and all FRT use must be documented for public reporting and audit purposes.
