The article claims that nearly 1,000 schools in China are using facial recognition supplied by a company called Baidu Brain.

The article looks at Hualong Primary School, a school in Guangzhou in China, and highlights several other Middle schools that have installed facial recognition to manage students and staff on campus. Hualong school uses a physical system by Tenniu Technlogy, which integrates facial recognition using Baidu Brain's software development kit (SDK).

The system was updated during Covid to allow for facial recognition with masks, and to raise an alert if the system detects someone the system doesn't recognise.
